Using only ropes, the fishermen from The Drook, led by Joe Perry, scaled 500' cliffs to the rocks below. Risking their own lives, they saved the crew of British steamer Tolesby.
The steamer had left Galveston, Texas, United States Of America, with a load of cotton destined for France. During February 1908, she ran into a blinding snow storm off Cape Race, Newfoundland and, with her crew of 27, was ship wrecked nearby in Trepassey Bay.
There was a similar occurence on, or about, January 20, 1877. At that time the steamship George Washington, en route from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Csnada to St. John's, Newfoundland, struck Mistaken Point, near Cape Race. The wreck of S.S. George Washington, having no survivors, was discovered at Bristow Cove. The combined efforts of the people of The Drook and Long Beach, having been lowered by ropes some 200' over a cliff to the wreck below, retrieved 14 bodies plus body parts. A most difficult task.
When driving from Portugal Cove South to Cape Race, a total of 20 miles, you eventually reach the crest of a steep hill overlooking The Drook. The view is spectacular. Proceed down to The Drook and stop. Meander around, …see the birds, - perhaps whales, …get your feet wet, …and maybe catch some caplin. … have fun. But, be sure to take pictures of those 600 million year old flat rocks flowing into the sea. Now, ---on to; Mistaken Point’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, then Long Beach, and finally the famous Marconi Center and light at Cape Race.
